Building bright futures – an interview with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winnipeg

For 55 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winnipeg has been changing lives by supporting meaningful connections through mentorship. At the heart of their mission is a powerful goal: to provide youth with the best possible futures.
“Mentoring relationships help people overcome challenges, build self-esteem, and help break down any barriers they may be facing in their lives,” says Jordan Cooney, senior manager of strategic partnerships.
With a waiting list of about 100 young people ready to be matched, the need for mentors is urgent. Becoming a mentor doesn’t require specific skills – just compassion and an interest in interacting with children.
“Mentors don’t need to be perfect, of course. They just need to be willing to learn and offer guidance in a non-judgmental way,” says Cooney.
These relationships are transformative – something Cooney has seen first-hand.
“It really is something to witness their growth, confidence and resilience that develops, especially in the youth when they are enrolled in our programs. I love seeing the mentors taking pride in their mentee's achievements.”
